New to Town?
Welcome!!
Liberty is such a great place to live and raise a family! Since you’re new here we want to build up your pride in your new home and get you up to speed quick on why Liberty is so special.
Liberty is the county seat of Clay County and home to William Jewell College, the oldest private college West of the Mississippi. The old New Deal art-deco courthouse in the middle of the Historic Downtown Square is where you’ll go for marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, assessor, collector and County offices. The new county courthouse on the Northeast corner of the square is where you’ll go for tickets or court things in the county. (Right next to it is the Clay County Jail – where you’ll go if you lose in court.) In the Northeast corner of the Square is also Liberty City Hall – where you’ll go if you get a ticket from a Liberty officer or need to pay a water bill or yell at the mayor. (The Police Department is in the basement of City Hall.)
On that same square, Liberty was the site of the first daylight bank robbery in the United States. Oh, sure, people had broke in at night and blown the safe, but nobody had just walked up the teller stuck a gun in their face and said, “Give me all your money,” – until Frank and Jesse James (and some other guy) held up the Commerce Bank on the Historic Downtown Square on February 13, 1866. They got away with about $60,000 (which would be millions today) and shot and killed a 17-year-old William Jewell College student named George Wymore. By the way, the original homestead and birthplace of Jesse and Frank James is just up the road in Kearney, Missouri (still in Clay County). LINK In a related historical note, just off the West side of the Square is the recreation of the Historic Liberty Jail whose most famous occupant was Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormons.
Here is more about all the awards and recognition for Liberty Hospital! LINK Forbes Magazine ranked William Jewell College 10th in “Best Colleges,” Money Magazine ranked Liberty 3rd in “Best Places to Live,” and Family Circle Magazine ranked us 7th in “Best Places to Raise a Family.” LINK (Lots of other great stuff at that link, too!)
In 2019 Missouri Life Magazine named the Corbin Theatre Co. as the best “Little Theatre” in Missouri and the B&B Theaters Liberty Cinema 12 as the best “Movie Theater” in Missouri! Also, Luigi’s restaurant on the Liberty Square won for “Most Romantic Restaurant” and the Historic Downtown Square itself won for “Best Shopping District” in Missouri. How about that? And that’s not even all! Several other local businesses are mentioned in this one article. You can read it yourself here – LINK.
